This 40-page supplement to The Hero’s Journey in Five Days includes three of the most popular projects from our original, award-winning manual, The Hero’s Journey: A Guide to Literature and Life.

Each project explores the Hero’s Journey from a different perspective, helping student expand and deepen their understanding of the journey and the important themes it contains, and each project contains full lesson plans, student texts and examples or background material to enrich your teaching.

This supplement includes

  • Demeter and Persephone: The Death of Eternal Spring: Journeys are not taken in isolation. They each unfold through a dialogue between ourselves, those around us and our environment. This lesson, based on the classic Greek myth of Demeter, Persephone and Hades, explores the role that negotiation and compromise often take in our quests.
  • The Hero’s Journey Film Unit: This three- to five-day film project project is based on the classic film Field of Dreams, but the lessons and assignments will work with any film that has a strong hero’s journey theme. Can be done individually, in groups or as a class.
  • The Hero’s Journey Group Project: A week-long group project, this activity engages students in research, writing, group work and classroom presentations. Working in groups, students research non-Greek myths. They select a myth or legend, to a “script” and present the story to the class. Depending on how you prepare the project, it can take from three to five days.
